Massage Table Redesign
Case Study · Wellness Equipment · Mechanical Engineering
The brief
As his patent was about to expire, the inventor of a very popular massage table approached us to develop the new design that would again lead the industry. It's a scenario many successful inventors eventually face: the protection that kept competitors at bay is ending, and the answer isn't a lawyer — it's a better product.
What we did
Portability and supported comfort are the benchmarks of any great massage table, so those tenets drove the design from the onset. We took both to the next step:
- Patient comfort — refining the support structure so the table holds the patient comfortably through a full session.
- Ease of use for the masseuse — a table gets set up, adjusted, folded, and carried many times a day; the redesign treated the therapist's workflow as seriously as the patient's comfort.
- Fresh intellectual property — a redesign at patent expiry is also an opportunity to introduce new, protectable innovations rather than coasting on the old ones.
Why it matters
This project shows a pattern we see often: the right time to reinvent a winning product is before the market forces you to. If your product's patent horizon is approaching, a next-generation design can reset the competitive clock.
